Brian Van Emmerik of Custom Cut Land Works with his son
A Letter from the Owner

Hello, Upstate!

My name is Brian Van Emmerik, and my family and I are proud to call the Upstate home. I grew up working on my family’s farms in the Midwest, where I learned early that land takes care of you when you take care of it.

I spent more than twenty years in heavy civil construction, helping manage projects like the Ravenel Bridge in Charleston and the I-385 Gateway right here in Greenville. Custom Cut Land Works is where all of that experience comes home — to the driveways, home sites, and pastures of our neighbors across the Upstate.

We’re a family company through and through. My three boys are growing up around this work the same way I grew up on the farm, and we run the business on the values we live by: honesty, hard work, and respect for the land. When we’re on your property, we treat it like our own.

If you’ve got land that needs clearing, grading, or just a plan — give me a call. I’d be glad to walk it with you.

Upstate Land Clearing, Grading & Site Prep

Custom Cut Land Works is a family-owned land clearing and excavation company serving seven counties across the Upstate and the Lakelands — Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Pickens, Laurens, Greenwood, and McCormick. We clear overgrown lots and wooded acreage, grade building pads and yards, install gravel driveways built to survive Carolina rain, and dig farm and fishing ponds built to hold water.

Every job is walked before it’s priced, priced before it’s started, and run by the owner from the first stake to the final grade. No subcontracted crews, no surprise charges — just clean, precise site work from people who treat your land like their own.

What We Do

Every Job, Done Right.

How It Works

  1. 1

    Walk the land

We meet you on the property, hear the plan, and flag the problems that cost money before they cost you any.

  2. 2

    Straight quote

A written scope and a real number. No surprises, no upsells.

  3. 3

    Do the work

The right machine for the job, run by the owner — not a rented crew.

  4. 4

    Leave it clean

Graded, tidy, and ready for whatever comes next.

Why the Upstate Chooses Custom Cut

Owner-run, every job

Family-owned, and the owner runs the work on your property — never a subcontracted crew.

We never bury debris

Cleared material is mulched, hauled off, or burned legally — because buried debris settles into sunken driveways and cracked slabs years later.

Heavy-civil experience

More than twenty years in heavy civil construction, from the Ravenel Bridge to the I-385 Gateway — brought home to driveways, home sites, and pastures.

A free site walk, not a phone quote

We walk the land and quote what your property actually needs — a real number, not a guess over the phone.

Licensed, insured, compliance carried

Fully licensed and insured — and the SC811 locates, county rules, and erosion controls are ours to handle, never your fines.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does land clearing cost in the Upstate?

It depends on acreage, how thick the growth is, and how machines get in. That’s why we quote after a free site walk — you get a real number for your land, not a guess over the phone.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes — fully licensed and insured, and every job is run by the owner, not a subcontracted crew.

What happens to the trees and debris?

Your call: hauled off, mulched back into the ground, or staged for firewood. We price the options during the walk so nothing surprises you.

How big a job will you take on?

From a half-acre residential lot to full acreage. If a job isn’t a fit for our equipment, we’ll tell you on the walk and point you the right direction.

Do I need permits for clearing or grading?

Sometimes — it depends on your county and what the land drains into. We work across seven counties in the Upstate and the Lakelands and will tell you exactly what your project needs.
