Pendleton takes its name from Henry Pendleton, a Virginia-born Revolutionary War jurist who sat on the South Carolina Court of Common Pleas, and the town's story runs back to April 8, 1790, when the Justices of the Peace for Pendleton County bought the land for the new county seat. The old center still shows it. More than fifty buildings on and around the Village Green date from the 18th and 19th centuries in Greek Revival and Federal styles, among them Farmers Society Hall, finished in 1828 and known as the nation's oldest farmers hall still in use. The town keeps gathering here, too, with the Fall Harvest Festival each October and a summer music series called Groovin on the Green. Pendleton's ties reach far: Thomas Green Clemson's bequest led to the founding of Clemson Agricultural College in 1889, and the town's sister city is Stornoway in Scotland, a nod to its Scots-Irish roots.
