Greenville County Land Clearing Rooted in Travelers Rest
Travelers Rest has been a stopping place since its post office opened in 1808 under Thomas Edwards, a Revolutionary War veteran who served as the first postmaster. In 1888 a rail line reached the town along the Reedy River corridor, the route later nicknamed the Swamp Rabbit, and for about sixty years Renfrew Bleachery anchored the local economy after it opened in 1929. When the old line became the Swamp Rabbit Trail in 2009, the town rebranded as "TR" and grew into a weekend destination with restaurants, a brewery, a distillery, art galleries, and shops along Main Street. In the fall, neighbors still gather at Trailblazer Park for the Trailblazer Harvest Fest with its live music, food trucks, and local vendors, and the independently owned Bank of Travelers Rest, founded in 1946, keeps its headquarters in town. It is a place that holds onto its past while making room for what comes next.
