Belton was incorporated on December 19, 1855, with its town limits drawn as a half-mile circle around the railroad depot. Dr. G.W. Brown gave the land for that first depot and for a school, and Charles C. Chamberlain, a railroad supervisor, served as the town's first intendant. The 1908 depot now holds the Ruth Drake Museum of Local History and the SC Tennis Hall of Fame. The chili cook-off fills downtown each year, bluegrass plays at the depot on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, and the tall 1908 standpipe still stands over it all.
