Woodruff was once the mill, the cross roads, and the tavern at the heart of it all.
The family that gave Woodruff its name first shows up in 1787, in the earliest minutes of the Church of Christ at Jamey's Creek. The town itself was incorporated in 1874 with an estimated 150 people, but it was the railroad that changed everything. When the Port Royal & Western Carolina line reached town in 1885 as its southern terminus, complete with a turntable to send trains back the way they came, the population jumped from roughly 150 to around 1,600 within a year. Cotton followed close behind, with the Woodruff Cotton Oil Company in 1898, a cotton mill running by 1901, and the W. S. Gray Cotton Mill in 1907. Today around 4,333 people call Woodruff home, and reminders of those years still stand, like the Old Woodruff High School, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Woodruff's newest growth is concentrated along the SC Highway 101 corridor, where a large manufacturing plant northwest of downtown has brought new home sites to the area. A community like Cavins Farm, with most of its houses dating to around 2023, began as cleared ground. Yes. Both come up often around Woodruff, and each one calls for a slightly different touch. A new home site is often raw acreage that needs brush, stumps, and trees taken out before anything gets staked.
