Gray Court began with the Owings family, the first European settlers to reach this area in 1757, having come down from Owings Mills, Maryland. For years the place went by Dorrohville, named for David R. Dorroh, whose family ran the Stagecoach Stop Inn and the post office; that office opened as Dorroh in 1883 and took the name Gray Court in 1894. When the Charleston & Western Carolina Railroad came through in 1885–86 and the first train arrived in 1886, the town grew up around the depot, and it was formally incorporated in 1899 in honor of depot agent R.L. Gray. You can still read that history in the 1914 Colonial Revival Gray Court-Owings School and the downtown historic district along West Main Street. The Historical Society, organized in 2001, keeps the log cabins of the Culbertson Back Country Settlement alive, a Preserve America collection that fills with re-enactors and horse-drawn wagons each Pioneer Day in September. Fall brings the Gospel Festival and Boo On Main, and December closes the year with the Christmas Parade.
